Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, more commonly known these days as MetLife, was founded on March 24, 1868 as a mutually-owned insurance company. That means the actual owners of the company were also the policyholders. MetLife functioned that way until 2000, when it went public.
In 1981, the company purchased the landmark Pan Am building in New York City, where its historic boardroom still stands. By acquiring Travelers Life and Annuity group in 2005 – MetLife became the biggest life insurance company in the United States. They are also considered the 60th largest public company worldwide.
