For the first time since
cancer statistics were measured in the
United States – the number of
cancer deaths has
dropped significantly. From 2002-2003 – the number
dropped for the first time ever with 369
fewer deaths reported during that one-year period. Recently-completed data from 2004 (the latest available data) confirmed a trend from that period revealing 3,014 fewer
deaths in 2004 from the year before.
Doctors saw decreases of all types of
cancers among both
men and women; the
decline came most notably in cases of
colorectal cancer which saw
declines of over 1,000 cases among
both sexes.
The
death rate from
cancer has steadily
dropped since the early nineties – but increasing rates of
aging and population had always outpaced the drop in deaths.
Though this seems to signal a positive trend in
cancer deaths –- the decline is a drop in the bucket on the overall number of
cancer deaths reported in 2004--- 553,888.
