Eleven people were treated last week for E. Coli contamination after eating at four different Taco Bell locations in New Jersey. Taco Bell officials quickly responded and said test source of the E. Coli contamination was linked to green onions used in the companies' products.
The outbreak has spread to five states in the Northeast including Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and New York. Sixty four people have been infected.
The Centers for Disease Control released a statement today saying that the outbreak was undeniably linked to Taco Bells in the Northeast. 38 of the 64 people treated for the disease so far seem to have suffered from the same strain of E. Coli. Tests on white onions served from a New York Taco Bell restaurant revealed a different strain of E. Coli.
Simultaneously - Patrons of the unaffiliated Taco John’s franchise in the Midwest have also reported symptoms consistent with those of E. Coli. Seventy eight individuals who ate at Taco John locations in Minnesota and Iowa claimed to experience the symptoms of E.Coli.
Reports indicate that the Taco John contaminations stem from one of their numerous lettuce distributors.
UPDATE 12/19: The CDC has now deemed the Taco Bell outbreak over.
