Life Insurance and Retirement

Statistics prove that women live longer than men—on average 5 to 10 years longer. According to the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University, among people over 100 years old, 85% are women. The stats don't lie; almost 60% of American women live alone by the time they reach 85. 

Partly because women are unlikely to have enough life insurance to carry them through the senior years, 50% of women aged 75 or over who live alone are living in poverty. Add to that the fact that women are more likely to take time off work to raise children, their Social Security benefits after retirement could be reduced. 

Life insurance can be a golden parachute to help take care of retirement expenses. Permanent life insurance may be the best choice, because though it is more expensive than a term life policy, it lasts for the lifetime of the policyholder and accumulates cash value that the owner receives as dividends.

It is true that life insurance does cost more as you get older but that does not necessarily mean it is out of your price range. The key to getting lower rates is buying it when you are younger and healthy. Ask yourself how your spouse will manage in the senior years without you… financially and emotionally? Will there still be outstanding debts or a mortgage?
